Traveller’s Diarrhoea

Travellers’ diarrhoea (TD) is the most common illness experienced by travellers, affecting over 20% of those who travel to high-risk destinations of the world. It’s typically caused by ingesting contaminated food or water containing bacteria, viruses, or parasites. It usually resolves within a few days but can be severe and require medical attention.

Travellers’ diarrhoea is a common issue when visiting areas with different food and water hygiene standards. Caused by bacteria such as E. coli, it can quickly disrupt your trip. Fortunately, our pharmacy can provide essential treatments and preventative advice to help you stay well while abroad.

You may experience frequent loose stools, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, and urgency to use the toilet. Some travellers may also have a mild fever or feel generally unwell. While usually short-lived, it can spoil your plans if not managed quickly.

The main priority is to stay hydrated. Oral rehydration salts and anti-diarrhoeal medications like loperamide can help control symptoms. For more persistent or severe cases, we can supply a short course of antibiotics if appropriate. We also offer travel packs to prepare you before you go—speak to our team for expert support and tailored recommendations.

Loperamide may cause constipation or stomach cramps if used in excess. Antibiotics can sometimes cause mild stomach upset or, rarely, allergic reactions. We’ll make sure any treatment is safe and suitable for your travel plans.
