Malaria is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. It’s a major concern in parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and other tropical regions. If you’re travelling to an at-risk area, taking preventative measures is essential. Our pharmacy offers antimalarial tablets and expert travel health advice to help keep you protected abroad.

Symptoms usually develop 7 to 18 days after infection, though they can appear weeks later. You might experience fever, chills, sweating, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue—similar to flu. In more severe cases, it can cause organ complications, confusion, and seizures. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid serious health risks.

Malaria can often be prevented with a combination of antimalarial tablets and mosquito bite avoidance. Depending on your destination, we’ll recommend the most suitable antimalarial medication—such as doxycycline, atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone), or mefloquine. You should also use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and sleep under a mosquito net when needed. Visit our pharmacy for personalised advice and protection tailored to your trip.

Malaria prevention is crucial for children travelling to high-risk areas, but not all antimalarial medications are suitable for young ages. Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone Paediatric) is commonly recommended for children over 5kg, typically from around 3 months old, with doses adjusted based on weight. Mefloquine may also be used for children over 3 months and 5kg, though potential side effects like mood changes or sleep disturbances mean it’s used with caution. Doxycycline is not suitable for children under 12 due to the risk of tooth discolouration and effects on bone development. It’s essential that parents seek professional advice before travel to ensure safe and effective protection for their child.

For adults and teenagers, a wider range of antimalarial options is available. Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, and mefloquine are all generally safe for use, with the choice depending on destination, medical history, and personal tolerance to side effects. Older adults or those with existing health conditions may require a more tailored approach to avoid complications. Our pharmacy team can help you select the most appropriate medication for your journey, ensuring effective protection with minimal disruption to your travel plans.

Most people tolerate antimalarial tablets well, but mild side effects can occur. These may include nausea, stomach upset, dizziness, or vivid dreams—depending on the medication. Less commonly, people may experience mood changes or skin sensitivity to sunlight. We’ll help you choose the right option for your health and travel needs, ensuring your protection with minimal disruption.
