Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection affecting the central nervous system, caused by the TBE virus. It is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks and occasionally through consumption of unpasteurised dairy products from infected animals. TBE is common in parts of Central, Eastern, and Northern Europe, as well as in Russia and parts of Asia. It can cause severe neurological complications, including encephalitis and meningitis.

TBE spreads primarily through tick bites during outdoor activities in grassy or forested areas. Ticks are most active in spring and early summer. Preventive strategies include wearing long clothing, using insect repellent containing DEET, checking for ticks after outdoor exposure, and avoiding raw milk. Vaccination is highly effective and recommended for travellers engaging in outdoor activities in endemic areas.

Symptoms usually develop in two phases. The first phase includes flu-like symptoms: fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle aches. After a short improvement, some people develop neurological symptoms such as meningitis, encephalitis, and paralysis. Long-term effects such as cognitive issues and motor impairment can occur in some cases. There is no specific treatment once infected, so prevention is key.

The TBE vaccine consists of a primary series of two doses (usually 1–3 months apart), followed by a third dose after 5–12 months. This provides immunity for up to 3 years. Booster doses are recommended every 3–5 years for continued protection.

TBE vaccination is recommended for travel to endemic areas such as Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, the Baltics, and parts of Russia—especially for those planning to camp, hike, or engage in forestry activities.

Side effects are usually mild, such as tenderness at the injection site or tiredness. These typically pass within a day or two.

If you’re planning a hiking trip or staying in countryside regions of Europe or Asia, book your TBE vaccine with us to ensure you’re protected.
