Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes infections of the lungs and respiratory tract. It’s so common that most children have been infected with the virus by age 2. Respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-ul) virus can also infect adults.

RSV can cause severe infection in some people, including babies 12 months and younger (infants), especially premature infants, older adults, people with heart and lung disease, or anyone with a weak immune system (immunocompromised).

RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can lead to serious lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in infants, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions. It is one of the leading causes of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in young children and can result in hospitalisation, especially during seasonal outbreaks in autumn and winter.

RSV is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also be contracted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. Preventative measures include regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and surface disinfection. A new RSV vaccine (such as Arexvy or Abrysvo) has been introduced in some countries for older adults and pregnant women to protect both mother and baby. A monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab) is also available for high-risk infants.

RSV symptoms include runny nose, coughing, sneezing, fever, and wheezing. In infants and vulnerable adults, it may cause severe breathing difficulties, decreased oxygen levels, and signs of respiratory distress. In very young babies, it may present with poor feeding, irritability, and pauses in breathing (apnoea).

The newly developed RSV vaccines provide protection for at least one RSV season. For infants, a single dose of the monoclonal antibody provides several months of protection during peak RSV season. Research is ongoing into longer-term immunisation strategies.

RSV vaccines are not required for travel but are considered beneficial for specific populations—especially for older adults, those with heart or lung conditions, and newborns, particularly if travelling during peak RSV season or to areas with limited medical infrastructure.

Common side effects include injection site pain, headache, tiredness, and mild fever. Severe reactions are rare. The monoclonal antibody is generally well tolerated in infants.
