Meningitis

Meningococcal disease is a serious systemic infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis, which leads to inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (the meninges). There are six major disease-causing strains, known as serogroups: A, B, C, W, Y, and X. The infection is transmitted through prolonged or frequent close contact with the respiratory droplets or secretions of someone carrying the bacteria, typically via coughing, sneezing, or close personal contact.

Epidemics are most commonly reported in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly within the “meningitis belt,” and during religious pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia, such as Hajj and Umrah. For travellers to these regions, especially Saudi Arabia, proof of vaccination is often a visa requirement.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known as the meninges. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, but bacterial meningitis is the most severe and potentially life-threatening form. Common bacterial strains include Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae type B.

Meningitis spreads through respiratory droplets or close contact such as kissing, coughing, or sharing utensils. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent bacterial meningitis. Different vaccines target different strains (e.g., MenACWY, MenB, Hib). Good hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals also reduce the risk.

Symptoms can come on suddenly and include a high fever, stiff neck, headache, sensitivity to light, confusion, vomiting, and in babies, symptoms like a high-pitched cry, poor feeding, or a bulging soft spot on the head. A distinctive rash may also appear in some cases. Because meningitis can progress rapidly, it’s critical to seek medical attention immediately if any of these symptoms are suspected.

The duration of protection varies by vaccine type. The MenACWY vaccine provides protection for around 5 years, while MenB and Hib vaccines are part of childhood schedules with long-term immunity. Booster doses may be required for ongoing risk.

The vaccine is recommended for travel to the meningitis belt in sub-Saharan Africa, especially during the dry season. It is also required for Hajj pilgrims visiting Saudi Arabia.

The vaccines for meningitis are generally very safe. Some people may experience mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, or tiredness. These effects are short-lived. Serious side effects are extremely rare. Since meningitis can be life-threatening, the benefit of vaccination far outweighs any temporary discomfort.
