HPV vaccine

A common virus with over 200 variants, most which are harmless. However, some variants can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts and other types of cancers. It is best to get vaccinated before you have sex for the first time as this means you are protected before you are first exposed to HPV. You will still benefit from the vaccine if you have had sex.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 100 related viruses, some of which are spread through sexual contact. Certain strains can cause genital warts, while others are linked to various cancers, including cervical, anal, penile, and throat cancer. HPV is extremely common; most sexually active people will contract it at some point in their lives.

HPV is transmitted primarily through intimate skin-to-skin contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be spread through non-penetrative genital contact. The most effective method of prevention is vaccination, ideally before the onset of sexual activity. Regular cervical screening also plays a key role in preventing cervical cancer caused by HPV.

Most HPV infections are asymptomatic and clear on their own. Some strains cause genital warts—soft, fleshy growths around the genital or anal area—while others persist and can lead to cancer years later if left untreated.

The HPV vaccine (e.g., Gardasil 9) offers long-term protection. Studies suggest immunity lasts at least 10 years, and likely much longer, possibly lifelong. Two or three doses are required depending on the age at first vaccination.

The HPV vaccine is not generally required for travel, but it is part of routine vaccination programmes in the UK and other developed countries. It is strongly recommended for all young people, regardless of travel.

Side effects may include pain or swelling at the injection site, headache, or fever. Fainting has been reported in adolescents, so monitoring for 15 minutes post-injection is advised.
