Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids, including through unprotected sex, sharing needles, or from mother to child during birth. While hepatitis B occurs worldwide, it is most common in East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Amazon, parts of Europe, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. In rare cases, acute infection can lead to fulminant hepatic necrosis, which is often fatal.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. It is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which is one of the world’s most common infectious diseases. Chronic infection can lead to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer if left untreated.

The virus spreads through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. This includes unprotected sex, sharing needles, contaminated medical equipment, and from mother to baby at birth. Hepatitis B can also be transmitted through tattoos or piercings done with unsterile equipment. Vaccination is the most effective prevention method and is recommended for all infants, high-risk adults, and travellers to certain countries.

Symptoms of acute hepatitis B include fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, dark urine, nausea, vomiting, and joint pain. However, many people—especially children—may not show symptoms initially. Chronic infection may go unnoticed for years until liver complications develop.

After a full course (usually three doses over six months), the vaccine offers long-term protection—often lifelong for those who respond adequately. A blood test can confirm immunity if needed.

The vaccine is recommended for travel to high-risk countries, including those in Africa, East Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Islands.

Common side effects include redness or soreness at the injection site, tiredness, and mild fever. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare.
