Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver. Symptoms are generally mild but increase in severity with age. The virus is spread via the faecal-oral route via contaminated food or close person to person contact.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that poses a higher risk to certain travellers, particularly those visiting regions with poor sanitation and food hygiene. This includes tourists staying with local populations, long-term or frequent travellers, individuals with existing liver conditions or haemophilia, men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, those working in high-risk areas, and people travelling to outbreak zones with limited access to clean water and healthcare.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. It is usually spread through ingestion of contaminated food or water, or via close contact with an infected person.

The virus spreads through the faecal-oral route, often in areas with poor sanitation. Prevention includes good personal hygiene, careful food and water consumption, and vaccination, especially for travellers to high-risk countries.

Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, and loss of appetite. Some people, especially children, may show no symptoms.

The hepatitis A vaccine provides long-term protection. A single dose gives short-term immunity, and a booster 6–12 months later offers protection for at least 20 years, potentially lifelong.

The vaccine is recommended for travel to areas with poor sanitation, including parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America.

Side effects are generally mild and may include soreness at the injection site, headache, tiredness, and a low-grade fever.
